Long rumored as a candidate to run against Tuckahoe resident and Westchester County Legislator Sheila Marcotte (R) for her current seat in November, former Tuckahoe Mayor John Fitzpatrick (D) yesterday confirmed the suspicions of many in both parties.
“I’m definitely in,” he said, of the race for the 10th District seat on the County Board of Legislators.
The 10th District is composed of Eastchester, Tuckahoe and parts of New Rochelle. Democrats from both New Rochelle and Eastchester are circulating petitions on his behalf. Fitzpatrick also said that he had received the endorsement of the Working Families Party for the seat.
In the spring of 2010, Fitzpatrick sought the nomination of his party to run in a special election for the seat vacated by former County Legislator Vito Pinto (R), also a Tuckahoe resident.
However, at a nominating “mini-convention,” Fitzpatrick fell short to New Rochelle Library Trustee Greg Varian (D) in a weighted vote of Democratic Party delegates that was divided almost completely on community lines between party leaders from Eastchester and New Rochelle, which has a much higher Democratic voter registration.
Varian ultimately was defeated by Marcotte in June’s special election. Marcotte, for her part, has already wrapped up the Republican, Conservative and Independence Party lines for the November ballot.
New Rochelle Democratic Party Chair Arnold Klugman said earlier this week he had heard from Eastchester Democratic Party Chair John Filiberti that Fitzpatrick was running. He said no candidate had emerged on the New Rochelle side and that the party therefore planned to support Fitzpatrick this time around.
